Figure 1: Front label view. |
Here is a green 7-Up soda bottle with a crown cap finish that we found in a cornfield next to a small country road...and miraculously, the bottle is somehow still intact [Figure 1].
As you can see, the applied color label (ACL) is very worn on the front, which could cause difficulties dating the bottle if this is all we have to go off of.
Figure 2: Rear label view. |
The back of the bottle [Figure 2] initially looks as if the ACL has been completely worn off; but when I held it under a bright light, the ACL text faintly showed up.
Figure 3: Back label. |
It looks and reads exactly like the example to the right [Figure 3].
Figure 4: 1955 advertisement. |
This particular back label was used between the years 1953 to 1968, coinciding with the usage of the 7-Up front label that did not include a swimsuit-clad woman [Figure 4]. [1]
Figure 5: 1950 advertisement. |
Prior to this, 7-Up front labels had the swimsuit woman and also had the text REG. U.S. PAT. OFF. under the red 7up sign [Figure 5].
Figure 6: View of the bottle's base. |
The base of the bottle [Figure 6] has the embossments: LG 66 / 909 11, with a circular mold seam overlapping with the text.
The LG mark is the trademark for Liberty Glass Company, in use from 1955 til around 1971. The number 66 to the right of LG indicates that this bottle was manufactured in the year 1966. Thankfully, this matches up correctly with the label dating.
