Presto Wide Mouth Glass Top Jar - [Owens-Illinois Glass Co.]

According to the Bureau of Land Management, the PRESTO series of jars was made by the Illinois Glass Co. and its subsidiaries after March 1, 1927 (the first use date of the trademark).

The PRESTO logo (#243,989) was registered by the Illinois Glass Co. on July 3, 1928.

Both PRESTO GLASS TOP jars and PRESTO SUPREME MASONS were embossed MANUFACTURED BY ILLINOIS PACIFIC GLASS CORP. in two lines across the back heels of the jars.

These Presto jars had a metal cap with a glass liner to keep food from touching the metal.

This PRESTO WIDE MOUTH GLASS TOP jar was made by the Owens-Ilinois Glass Co. and was embossed on the back heel in two lines with the text "MFD. BY" followed with the full company name.

It should be noted that any bottle that is embossed with the full name of one of the Illinois Glass companies was made for the export trade, especially if accompanied by the city/state designation of the factory.

The base of this jar has in the very center, a perfectly circular suction scar/ mark.  Directly above the suction mark is the embossed Owens-Illinois "diamond IO" maker's mark.  To the left of that is the numeral '7', and to the right is the numeral '6', and under the suction mark is the numeral '2'.  Based on the Owens-Illinois Glass Co. dating code, we know that this jar was made before 1954, which means the number to the right of the maker's mark indicates that the jar was manufactured in 1936.  The '7' indicates that the jar was manufactured at the factory in Alton, Illinois.
