Phillips' Milk of Magnesia bottles have been around for a long time--since 1873--and are exceedingly common. However, dating these bottles hasn't gotten easier with the years. No specific system for identifying these (generally) cobalt-blue glass bottles seems to exist, to my knowledge.
Given the information we already know about the Chas. H. Phillips Chemical Co. and Phillips' Milk of Magnesia:
- The base has the embossment: "GENUINE PHILLIPS / MADE IN U.S.A.", surrounded by the typical Owens machine suction scar found in most machine-made bottles of this time.
- There is a sideways 'G' to the left.
- There is a sideways '31' to the right.
- The finish is a continuous external thread--there exists a ridge of uninterrupted glass that wraps around the finish at least once. We know that the earlier Milk of Magnesia bottles used a cork closure until the mid-1920s, where external threaded finishes completely took over (along with machine-made bottles).
- There is no trademark embossment on the side of the bottle. This indicates, especially when the bottle is a deeper shade of blue, that the bottle was most likely not manufactured before the 1960s (but not after 1976 when the glass bottle-making was out-sourced to glass bottle makers like Hazel-Atlas).
The following two photographs likely show something similar to my bottle:
i found a bottle just like your blue phillips bottle on a beach off of the james river in va
ReplyDeleteI have a Genuine Phillips Cobalt Made In U.S.A. 5" bottle wit #5 to the left & a letter "C" in a circle to the right on the bottom of the bottle . What can you tell me about my bottle ?
ReplyDeleteHi there. Based on your description of the glass maker's mark, it almost sounds as if the bottle was manufactured by the Chattanooga Glass Company, which used the 'C in a circle' mark from 1927-1988. However, this company primarily manufactured glass soda bottles (like the classic hobbleskirt-shaped Coca-Cola bottle), so it would be unlikely that they had produced your Milk of Magnesia bottle.
DeleteIs it possible that the 'C' you are seeing is actually a 'G' ? The 'G in a circle' glass maker mark was used by the Gulfport Glass Company in Gulfport, Mississippi from 1955-1970. This company, a subsidiary of the Maryland Glass Corporation in Baltimore, MD, was a heavily produced cobalt blue glass bottles for companies like Phillips Milk of Magnesia. If I had to guess, I'd say that's the company that made your particular bottle.
In addition, if your bottle has no embossments on the body or sides, and the color of the glass is a dark, rich blue (like the bottles pictured in this post), it was most likely produced post-1960 when paper labels were introduced.
Hope that helps a little!
Thank you! I'm researching a bottle my deceased brother had! It's really hard to find any information. Our botle is dark cobalt, 7 inches tall. Marked on the bottom as Made in the USA. Genuine PHILLIPS and maybe C 9 or G 9 but no circle.
DeleteI have 6 Genuine Phillips Made in the U.S.A. dark cobalt bottles, and three have a G and three most definitely have a c in a circle on them.
ReplyDeleteI am having so much trouble trying to find an age on my bottle!!! Its 7 inches tall, has the word Trade Mark in the top circle of the logo... Glenbrook Conn. near the bottom. On the base it says U.S.A. in the middle on the right it has an A with a 3 sided covering around it (not on the bottom though) and to the left it says K-929 under the USA it has B5 I don't think its super old or anything, I just want to know an approximate date. I am new at collecting
ReplyDeleteI have a bottle exactly like yours... only difference is instead of A3 mine has C-6. Everything else is the same. Its raise print in the glass (not a label). K-929 and everything. Did you ever have any luck finding out the age or the value of it?
DeleteMine has a m and a 12
ReplyDeleteMine has a m and a 12
ReplyDeleteI just found 2 of these bottles today. Both are lighter, see through blue, have short corkscrew necks with "Genuine Phillips Milk of Magnesia" in raised glass letters on the bottle, as well as a circle symbol that looks like a belt with a little pocket inside and the initials "ge" or "ge" (lower case) inside.
ReplyDeleteThe smaller one is 7 inches from top to bottom and says "made in Canada" on the bottom. The bigger one is 9 inches from top to bottom and says "Made in the USA" with a Z3 on the left of USA and square-ish capital A on it's side on the right, with what could be another capital A around it but it doesn't have the top line. (if that makes sense!)
I wish I could put pictures on so you could see them!
I was looking at the Trademarks and Manufacturers part of your site and up came the symbol for Hazel Atlas which is on the bottom of the big bottle. It looks like the one that was registered on June 24, 1924. But I see the variations used between the years.
ReplyDeleteI also found a third bottle which has nothing on it (not even on the bottom) but looks like bottles in the above pictures. The pasted on label obviously wore off over the years. It's much darker than the other two.
I found a 5" M of M the bottom looks like a 19 also on the left is what looks like a A set inside what looks like a big H.
ReplyDeleteI have milk of magnesia blue glass bottle with the paper label and has the letter m on the bottom but no Year when was it made?

ReplyDeleteI just dug up a bottle in my backyard while planting a bush. The bottles 5 in, looks to be light blue on the bottom it says made in USA with the letter m and looks like a number 3. On the front of the bottle it has milk of magnesia with a trademark letter h, and says the Chas H Phillips Chemical Company Glenbrook Connecticut. Any idea when and where it was manufactured?

ReplyDeleteDon't care how common they are. Love them all.
ReplyDeleteFound a cobalt blue 5in bottle. No makings on bottle except for a fee letters and numbers on the bottom. Looks like a sideways C with a D inside of a diamond shape followed by a .5
ReplyDeleteAny info on how to search the dates or ways to identify bottles would help.
This was from a bottle dump. Some other bottles here were from around 1928-1930. Based on their makings they were easier to pin point
I have an 8"cobalt blue round bottle. On the bottom is an M in a circle and 5-46. Not sure if this is a milk of magnesia bottle.
ReplyDeleteI have a Cobalt blue Phillips bottle that I can not find info on.
ReplyDeleteIt is 9" tall, it has Genuine Phillips on the bottom facing one direction with a M and a 3 on either side of it. The other direction it says made in the U.S.A. Can anyone give me some information on when it was manufactured. I am assuming that it is was made by the Maryland Glass Company from what I am gathering. Thanks in advance.

ReplyDeleteNeed info on a 5 in tall cobalt blue Genuine Phillips milk of magnesia tablet bottle manufactured at Gulfport Glass Co., Indicated by the sideways G on bottom right side. What I need info on is, there is a sideways 17 in the left side of the bottle bottom( at the end of genuine). I'm wondering what that 17 means? I haven't been able to find that information anywhere I've looked. And I've been researching this bottle for going on 2 weeks now. It is an embossed bottle, made in U.S.A., with the only markings of any kind only on the bottom. Any help toward what the 17 means would be greatly appreciated and thank you, all who reply, very much, indeed. Happy bottle hunting to all!!!
