Atlas Strong Shoulder Mason Jar [Hazel-Atlas]

1925 Strong Shoulder
Mason Ad

I dug up a quart-sized, colorless "Strong Shoulder" fruit jar manufactured by Hazel-Atlas Glass Company.  From what I understand, colorless/clear glass mason jars are fairly common and not worth a whole lot, whereas the bright-colored aqua or blue masons are rarer and worth more.

Atlas fruit jars were manufactured in Wheeling, West Virginia.

Because many of their standard shoulder seal jars had issues with cracking, the "Strong Shoulder" jar was created with the seal placed on a raised lip instead, also known as a bead seal.

Figure 1

The front of the bottle is embossed with the text, ATLAS / STRONG SHOULDER / MASON in rather spidery handwriting. (Figure 1)

This jar has vertically straight parallel sides which end abruptly at a short, sharply rounded 90 degree horizontal shoulder--a style seen usually on older canning jars from the late 1800s to the early 1900s.

The base of the bottle is embossed with: B (or the number 8) / "H over A" logo / 5 / M along the bottom circumference of the base.  It's difficult to see in the picture, but the two vertical seams on the body of the bottle extend into the base to the circular base mold seam. (Figure 2)

  1. I was reading this page. I came across an Atlas Strong Shoulder Mason (written on the front), on the bottom H over A with a number 9. It has a Zinc lid with a slit like for coins but the jar is very small. 4 oz. What was that used for?

  8. I have an Atlas strong shoulder Mason jar. No other markings but has original zinc lid with the inside seal intact. It is blue green in color. I am having trouble dating is as it has no other markings. It is blown with side seams that stop before the neck. Any ideas since no other markings are on this jar?
