Franklin Products 1845 Amber Serum Bottle [O. M. Franklin Serum Co.]

1921 Aggressin vaccine advertisement for the Kansas Blackleg Serum Co.

The veterinarian who discovered this vaccine, Dr. Oliver Morris Franklin, collaborated with one of his colleagues to create the Kansas Blackleg Serum Company in Wichita, Kansas in 1916 to sell and market Franklin's blackleg vaccine, named Aggressin.

In 1917, the Kansas Blackleg Serum Co. opened a new branch and headquarters in Denver, Colorado.

The production of Aggressin was expensive, but in 1920, Dr. Franklin discovered the blackleg bacterin that allowed the mass production of this prevention/cure of blackleg in cattle.

In 1927, the company name was changed to O. M. Franklin Blackleg Serum Co.

In 1937, the company dropped 'Blackleg' from its name and became O. M. Franklin Serum Co.*

In addition to their Aggressin vaccine and bacterin, O. M. Franklin Serum Co. began selling livestock supplies in 1925. In 1930, they expanded further by adding pharmaceutical supplies and various other vaccinations to their product line.

It appears that Franklin Serum Co. may have manufactured their pharmaceutical bottles themselves rather than purchase them from one of the many manufacturers (Owens-Illinois, Hazel-Atlas, T.C.W., etc.) in business at the time, as its only marks/embossments are the ones belonging to the Franklin Serum Co.

Identifying the bottle:

After some unreasonably deep Googling, I think I've finally figured this bottle out!

base of amber glass medicine bottle with text franklin products 1845 and a circled star symbol in the center

This medicine bottle/container was most likely to have been manufactured for the O. M. Franklin Serum Company, the first company to develop a successful blackleg virus vaccine for cattle.

We dug this up in the woods next to the Kansas River in Eudora, Kansas.  It's a smaller (2.5" x 1.06") amber glass medicine/pharmaceutical bottle with an embedded rubber stopper and metal top.

The base has the text FRANKLIN PRODUCTS 1845 embossed around a circle with a star outline in the center.

Two prominent, vertical seams run down to the base of this bottle on either side of the body.

*By 1963, the company was acquired by American Home Products Corp. of New York, and the company name was changed to Franklin Laboratories.

  1. I found a bottle that is the same except it still has the top middle metal stopper and is still full of medicine. Any idea of the worth?
